“Big Brother and the National Reading Curriculum” by Richard L. Allington. “How ideology trumped evidence” is the focus of this book. Basically, most of what is mandated for reading instruction has been done before and didn’t work when it was done the first time. However, opportunists took it upon themselves to ignore evidence in the name of fighting illiteracy which led to bogus research and bogus laws (No Child Left Behind) which led to funding being tied to specific instructional practices, that didn’t work 30-40 years ago. I will do my best to give more information as I get through the book. Just know that a lot of what you know about reading instruction in America is ideologically motivated, not evidence motivated which is a problem. #education #personalfavorites
